Campeche, the Historic Fortified City
San Francisco de Campeche, capital of the state of Campeche, safeguards wealth of Mayan and Spanish origin.
During the colonial era it was a strategic port for New Spain, where various products came out. This cultural and commercial exchange gave rise to the Fortified Historical City, another way to call Campeche.
It is a fortification system that was built between the 17th and 18th centuries that stands out for its military architecture. In this way, they protected themselves from pirates.
Originally, the hexagonal wall measured 2,720 meters, had eight bastions and four gates. A large part of the wall, two of its doors and seven bastions are still preserved.
Inside, temples, gardens, elegant squares, colorful mansions and other cultural venues were built, which formed a great city.
Heritage that makes us proud
Since 1999, UNESCO declared it as Cultural Heritage of Humanity for its history and architectural value.
There we can find civil and cultural buildings such as La Biblioteca, El Principal and a museum about pirates. On the other hand, there is the Xmuch’Haltún Didactic Botanical Garden, the Popular Art Garden, among others. Within the military we can highlight the bastions of San Carlos, Santa Rosa and La Soledad. From there you will enjoy a beautiful view of Campeche.
Of course, religious architecture is not far behind. Among the temples located there are: The Church of San Francisco and that of San Juan de Dios. In addition, there are places to try the best dishes of the region.
Being a fortified city, Campeche protects itself beyond pirates and safeguards a heritage that we are proud of.
