Cumbres de Majalca National Park is an amazing place located just 47 kilometers from the city of Chihuahua. The majestic rock formations, grasslands and pine and oak forests characterize this wonderful place.
The Cumbres de Majalca cover a total area of 4,772 hectares. They were formed during a process that lasted thousands of years, where water and wind shaped the rocks of its numerous canyons.
This park represents the transition between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Chihuahuan desert. Bird species such as the golden eagle, the bird sparrow hawk and the red-tailed eagle live here.
50 years ago this site was ideal for observing species such as black bears, the Mexican gray wolf or the golden eagle. However, hunting and habitat destruction have caused populations of this species to decline.
Due to its overexploitation, in 1939 the president Lázaro Cárdenas issued the decree to preserve the flora and fauna of the park. It is worth mentioning that, since 2008, it has been administered by the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas.

What to do?
In addition to enjoying the amazing scenery, here you can practice endless activities such as hiking and camping. There are several camping areas with some ejidos where you will find basic services. We recommend the Las Hadas Canyon, where you will find stone tables.
You can also enjoy a picnic on the edge of the springs that the park houses. One of the most popular is known as “El Ojito”, and is on the way up to the mountains.
How to get to Cumbres de Majalca?
Starting from Mexico City, the trip will take you about 18 hours by car. If you do not want to cross much of the country by car, we recommend you take a flight to Chihuahua and from there continue.
The Cumbres de Majalca are about 48 kilometers to the north of the city of Chihuahua. To get there you must take federal highway 45 (Chihuahua – Ciudad Juárez).
When you get to kilometer 31 you will find the detour to the park. After turning you will have to continue for another 30 kilometers until finally reaching the Cumbres de Majalca.
