There are places in different parts of the world that have a bit of culture, history or tradition of our country. An example of this is the Plaza de México, known in German as Mexikoplatz. A place that commemorates Mexico.

Mexico in Austria
This square is located on the right side of the Danube river in the Handelskai. Known for being one of the longest streets in the Austrian capital.
According to historical data, it is known that this site began between the years 1868 and 1975. The plaza has gone by different names, from “Plaza del Archiduque Carlos” and “Plaza de la Milicia”.
However, from 1956 the place began to be called ‘Mexikoplatz’, this because Mexico was the only one that protested diplomatically against the Nazi invasion of the Central European state.
You can even see a small monument that was built in 1985 to commemorate the Mexican protest. In which you can see the National Shield of Mexico and the legend:
“In March 1938, Mexico was the only country that officially protested to the society of nations over the violent annexation of Austria to National Socialist Germany. In tribute to that act, the city of Vienna gave the name of Mexico to this square ”.
Mexikoplatz in honor of our country
On March 12, 1938 it was when the Nazi army invaded Austria. Days later, specifically on March 19, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Isidro Fabela, appeared before the League of Nations in Geneva.
It was Fabela who delivered and signed a protest commissioned by President Lázaro Cárdenas. In said protest, the Mexican Republic proclaimed itself against the German invasion and indicated the following:
“The form and circumstances that caused the political death of Austria signify a serious attack on the Covenant of the League of Nations and the sacred principles of international law.”
