Mexican tourist destinations could disappear in 2050

Problems with climate change are increasing more and more every day. As a study revealed places like Acapulco, Tabasco and Holbox, present worrisome threats due to sea level rise. And, by 2050 it would have irreversible effects. According to statistics, sea level rise could affect 300 million people worldwide.

Prevent a tragedy before 2050

This research belongs to the Climate Central organization, which was published in Nature Communications. This situation could affect 300 million people in 2050. And up to 480 million in 2100.

“We were surprised to discover that our coasts are more vulnerable than researchers had initially thought,” said Dr. Benjamin Strauss, CEO of Climate Central, and co-author of the study. These data seeks to prevent a great tragedy. Well, it is believed that the most affected regions will be China, India and Southeast Asia.

Affectations in Mexican territory

A 0.1 meter reduction in the global sea level rise poses a great threat to the safety of 10 million people. This was indicated by a recent report by an important expert agency that advises the UN.

Among the Mexican places that will be strongly affected is the Caribbean, especially the Quintana Roo region and its natural reserves. Similarly the island of Holbox, Mahahual and the lagoon of Bacalar.

On the other hand, the coasts of Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco and lower regions of Veracruz will be affected. As for the south, it is estimated that the Acapulco coast has only 30 years to live:

“Not only is drowning, the rise in water causes erosion, affecting tourism. Also, fishing, food production and biodiversity.”

But not all is lost. If the temperature rise is stabilized and the burning of fuels is eradicated, it is possible that the affectations are reversed.
