Organic market has grown a lot over the years in Mexico because of its health benefits. This is why, Mexico has become the fourth organic food producers in the world. According to data from ‘Agrifood and Fisheries Information Services’ more than a million acres in our country are used to harvest this kind of food.
Oaxaca, Chiapas and Michoacan use 50% of their land to plant these products. Chihuahua and Nuevo Leon are also on top of the list.

More than 45 organic products are cultivated in Mexico, on the list there’s coffee, safflower, avocado, corn and agave. Only these 5 cover more than 80 thousand acres.
In addition, our country is among the top exporters worldwide. 85% of our national products reach the US, Germany, France, UK, Canada, Italy, Switzerland and Japan.
The advantage of consuming these kind of products is that they are harvested with natural methods, in comparison to those harvested conventionally that use fertilizers and pesticides. Some even are genetically modified and contain chemicals, which end up polluting our soil, water and damaging the wildlife.
On the downside, one of the biggest problems producers of organic food have is cost. Unlike traditional harvest, organic food is more expensive, their prices can go from 11% to 337% higher than regular.
Even so, this doesn’t discourage farmers. Samuel González Guzmán, ‘Fundación E’ president, has given capacitation to over 10 thousand young people to materialize their projects and promote agriculture and with the use of new technologies, prices might become more accesible.
If these kind of food is healthier and better for the planet, we believe we can make an effort to consume and promote these products.
