Teúl, the town in Zacatecas that has trajineras

If you think that the only trajineras in Mexico are located in Xochimilco, you are wrong. These traditional and colorful rides are also in Teúl, Zacatecas.

A town with colonial touches

Teúl de González Ortega is considered a Pueblo Mágico (Magical town). This place brings together the best of colonial architecture and natural landscapes. Its name comes from teúl (teotl) ‘god’, and it qualifies chichimecas as sacred and respectable.

Churches in Teúl are guarded by gargoyles, quarry walls and amazing halls. It is also famous for its infinite blue agave harvests and the various types of mezcal produced in this town. Besides all the cultural richness it has, the town also offers workshops, factories and walkways.

This region is home to a pier of chinampas with a chilango (mexican) style.

But is there a lake in Teúl?

Manual Caloca dam is responsible of the water flow. The two trajineras that are used for all trips are called “La Caxcana” and “La Ticuata”. Which are always waiting for visitors willing to marvel with the view.

Trajineras in Teúl, Zacatecas

Oyamel wood with water repellent properties, was used for its construction, as well as pine tree wood for longer beams. Also coconut fibers were used for safety of the travelers. These fibers permeate joints and alcayatas hold the wood together. This way, you don’t have to worry about your safety and you can enjoy the ride.

Just like in Mexico City, these trajineras have the capacity of transporting up to 20 people and a musical group, like mariachis.


During your tour, you are able to admire Cerro de Teúl, a center for the ancient caxcanes, or sail close to Cerro del Sombrero. But if you have an explorer spirit, you can even climb it and take amazing pictures.
