Silver with history
Built on top of the Tlahuica city of Tachco’s ruins, Taxco, due to its rich mineral and metal deposits, was one of the most important colonial cities in México. These were used by the Spanish, not only to create jewelry and coins, but also everyday objects that were sent to Spain.
During the XIX century, silver objects productions were focused on jars, plates, and cutlery for rich Mexican families. During these years, Paz Domínguez and his children’s work was of the best ones. So, they built pieces for Porfirio Díaz and the Custodia de la Iglesia de Santa Prisca.
On the XX century, the American William Spratling arrived, this was one of the first workshops dedicated to silver design opened in Taxco. Some of the best silversmiths came from this famous workshop called “Las Delicias” such as: Rafael “El China” Ruiz, Bruno Pineda, and Ezequiel Tapia. They created the unique and worldwide famous Taxco’s Design.
Taxco silver has been in Mexico since 1522, ever since Hernan Cortes named the first mine “el Socavón del Rey”. Now a days, there are hundreds of silver workshops and more than 5 thousand shops located in different streets around town.
In addition to every silver shop in Taxco, you can find a whole museum about it. The Museo de la Platería is located in Patio de las Artesanías. Here you can find anything from pre-hispanic to contemporary pieces that were presented in Nacional Silver Competitions.
Take a weekend off to visit this beautiful city. And don’t go without taking some of its traditional silver design with you.
